Mosquitoes: They Just Love Sweat!

Mosquitoes: They Just Love Sweat! first appeared on backyardbugpatrol.com.

Last week we posted an article all about why mosquitoes are so attracted to us. What tantalizes their taste buds and makes us such a delicious feast. What subliminal signals we are giving off to them that gives them the go ahead to hop onto our skin and have themselves a nice tasty treat. We thought it important to share another article as to why we are just so appealing to these needle nosed feeding bloodsuckers.

Why you’re so attractive to mosquitos

Sometimes it’s hard to define what makes someone attractive. But for those being courted by mosquitoes, it could be due to their genetics. It’s not the perfume or deodorant on a person, it comes down to three things, says University of Maryland Entomologist Mike Raupp.”Carbon dioxide, lactic acid and body heat are three of the most important cues used by mosquitoes to locate hosts,” Raupp says.

This is a great alert to anyone out there that exercises regularly. It seems that those of us who take to working up a sweat are putting ourselves at risk, as mosquitoes are attracted to sweat. Sounds quite disgusting, and even more of a reason to invest in not only antiperspirant  especially designed for those that exercise, but also some mosquito protection.

So this is why most people tend to get bites around the ankles and feet! Here’s an article written by someone that seems to be a favorite menu item. It’s a funny story, but we can sense her misery.

I’m Irresistible… to Mosquitoes

I’m really loving this warm September weather. And guess who else is loving these last, lingering days of summer? The local mosquito population! When I step outside, if there’s a mosquito within miles, it will start heading in my direction — as will all of its brothers and sisters — eagerly anticipating a delicious snack.

Unfortunately, what she says is true. These pests are not going anywhere, and so it’s up to us to adapt and cope with them as a part of life. We just need to ensure that we protect our families and pets as best we can, and hope that one day, they have a change of heart and all turn vegetarian!
