Mosquito Control in Montgomery County

Mosquito Control in Montgomery County first appeared on Backyard Bug Patrol

Hey Montgomery County – yes, that means you Bethesda, Potomac, Gaithersburg and Rockville. Did you know that Montgomery County does NOT have a mosquito control program? They will not kill mosquitos. That’s right – if you’re having mosquito problems the county does not support a mosquito control program. You are on your own.

Drain PipeThe Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater Facility Maintenance Program (DEP) is responsible for inspecting and maintaining 4000 storm water facilities around the county. Most facilities are designed to drain within four days, meaning that there is no standing water so no mosquito production. But what happens if one of these storm water management facilities has a malfunction and accumulates standing water? You now have the potential for a massive mosquito problem. And it could be right in your neighborhood.

What can you do you about it? If you make a complaint to the DEP they will investigate. They will notify the owner of the facility (the county doesn’t own them) and make recommendations. And that’s it. It’s up to owners to decide whether or not they want to deal it. If they don’t want to kill the mosquitos, tough luck. Oh, did I mention that you don’t have a public mosquito control problem?

So, Montgomery County residents, if there is a problem with one of these storm water management facilities, what can you do? Want to kill mosquuitos? The best way to help yourself is to utilize a proven barrier spray program that will kill the mosquitoes in and around your yard and put up a protective barrier that will last up to three weeks.
